Cultural Notes

School is the center of social life

In Japan, 学校 is not just where you study — it is where friendships, clubs, and daily routines happen. Students often stay at school until evening for after-school activities. When someone says 学校に行きます, it often means their whole day, not just classes.

に vs で — going TO vs doing AT

This is one of the trickiest things for beginners. Think of に as an arrow pointing at your destination: 学校に行きます (I go TO school). Think of で as a circle around where the action happens: 学校で勉強します (I study AT school). Same place, different meaning depending on whether you are moving there or doing something there.

宿題 culture runs deep

Japanese students get 宿題 almost every day, even during summer break. Not finishing your homework is taken seriously — it is not just about grades but about showing respect for your 先生 and your classmates. If a friend says 宿題をします, they really mean it.
