Cultural Notes

可愛い is everywhere

Japanese people use 可愛い way more than English speakers say "cute." You can call animals, people, clothes, food, and even handwriting 可愛い. It is one of the most common words you will hear in daily life in Japan.

Dogs vs cats in Japan

Japan is famously a cat-loving country - there are cat cafes, cat islands, and lucky cat statues everywhere. But 犬 are just as popular as pets. If someone asks 犬と猫、どちらが好きですか, they are asking one of Japan's favorite debate questions.

山 and the Japanese landscape

About 73% of Japan is mountains, so 山 comes up constantly in place names, travel plans, and daily conversation. Many Japanese last names include 山 too - like 山田 or 山本. When someone says 山に行きます, they might mean hiking, visiting a hot spring town, or just a weekend trip to the countryside.
