Cultural Notes

Depato are more than just stores

In Japan, a デパート is not just a place to buy things. The top floors usually have restaurants, and the basement floor (called "depachika") is famous for beautiful, high-quality food. People often go to a デパート to eat, not just to shop.

遊ぶ means more than playing

While 遊ぶ can mean "to play" like children do, adults use it all the time to mean "to hang out" or "to go have fun." If a friend says 遊ぼう, they are inviting you to spend time together - not to play on a playground.

Ask before you 撮る

Taking photos in Japan is common, but it is polite to ask before photographing someone. In 映画館 and many 美術館, photography is not allowed. You will often see signs that say 写真はだめです (no photos).
