Grammar
was; were (casual past)
Use だった at the end of a sentence to say what something WAS. It's the casual past version of だ. You'd use this with friends or in relaxed situations - like saying "it was a park" or "yesterday was Monday." For polite situations, use でした instead.
Pattern
[noun] + だった
[describing word like 元気/好き] + だった
Noun + だった Describing words like 元気 or 好き + だった 公園 → 公園だった (it was a park) 元気 → 元気だった (was well/healthy) Just replace だ with だった to talk about the past.
Examples
- だった is casual - use it with friends. In polite speech, use でした instead.
- Words that end in い when describing something (like 大きい, 新しい) have their own way of talking about the past. Just change the い to かった - so 大きい becomes 大きかった.
