Cultural Notes

Train culture in Japan

Japan is famous for its trains running exactly on time. If a train is even one minute late, the railway company will issue a delay certificate. People plan their commutes down to the minute, so 駅 (station) is one of the most important places in daily life.

Taking off shoes when staying overnight

When you 泊まる at someone's home or a traditional inn, you always take off your shoes at the entrance. This is a deeply rooted custom in Japan - the inside of a home is considered clean space, and wearing shoes inside would be very rude.

Passports and domestic travel

Japan has excellent domestic travel options - 飛行機, 船, and the famous bullet train. For domestic trips, you do not need a パスポート. But for any international 旅行, Japanese citizens and visitors alike need one ready at the 空港.
