Grammar
counter for cups/glasses of drinks
When you want to say how many cups or glasses of something you have, add 杯 (hai) after the number. The pronunciation changes depending on the number: one cup is いっぱい (ippai), two cups is にはい (nihai), three cups is さんばい (sanbai). You use this whenever you are ordering drinks or talking about how much you drank.
Pattern
[number] + 杯
[drink] を [number]杯 飲む
Number + 杯 一杯 (ippai) - 1 cup 二杯 (nihai) - 2 cups 三杯 (sanbai) - 3 cups 四杯 (yonhai) - 4 cups 五杯 (gohai) - 5 cups 六杯 (roppai) - 6 cups 七杯 (nanahai) - 7 cups 八杯 (happai) - 8 cups 九杯 (kyuuhai) - 9 cups 十杯 (juppai) - 10 cups 何杯 (nanbai) - how many cups?
Examples
- The sound changes with 1 (ippai), 3 (sanbai), 6 (roppai), 8 (happai), and 10 (juppai) - these are the tricky ones to remember.
- 杯 works for any drink in a cup or glass - tea, coffee, beer, juice, anything.
