The most common verb type. The ending sound changes depending on how you use it — like how 飲む (drink) becomes 飲みます in formal speech.
especially; particularly
Adverb
A word that describes how, when, or how much something happens — like とても (very) or いつも (always).
Grammar
Was [na-adjective] / Used to be [na-adjective]
Use this to talk about how things were in the past. だった is casual and でした is polite. If something was quiet yesterday or someone was free last week, this is how you say it.
Pattern
[na-adj] + だった
[na-adj] + でした
[word] + だった (casual past) [word] + でした (polite past) Examples: 静か → 静かだった / 静かでした 暇 → 暇だった / 暇でした
Examples
- でした is the safe choice for most situations. Use だった with close friends or when you want to sound casual.
- This works the same way for all na-adjectives - just swap the word before だった or でした.
