Grammar
Linking two descriptions together (and...)
When you want to say two things about something - like "cheap and delicious" - you change the ending of the first word. For words that end in い (like 大きい or 安い), you drop the い and add くて. It works like saying "and" between two descriptions in English.
Pattern
[word ending in い (drop い)] + くて + [next description]
Drop the final い from the word ending in い, then add くて. 大きい → 大きくて 安い → 安くて Exception: いい → よくて
Examples
- The word いい is special - it becomes よくて, not いくて.
- For words like 静か and きれい that go with な, use で instead: 静かで、きれいです.
Saying something is NOT a certain way
When you want to say something is NOT a description - like "not quiet" or "not famous" - you add じゃない after the な-word. It is like saying "is not" in English. For everyday polite speech, you can add です at the end: 静かじゃないです.
Pattern
[な-word] + じゃない
[な-word] + じゃないです
[な-word] + じゃない (casual) [な-word] + じゃないです (polite) 静か → 静かじゃない 便利 → 便利じゃない きれい → きれいじゃない
Examples
- じゃない is the casual version. Adding です makes it polite. When talking to someone you don't know well, use じゃないです.
