like / fond of

な-word

A describing word that needs な when placed before what it describes. 静かな部屋 means “quiet room.” These change differently from い-words.

私は魚が好きです。

watashi wa sakana ga suki desu — I like fish.

何が好きですか。

nani ga suki desu ka — What do you like?

私も果物が好きです。

watashi mo kudamono ga suki desu — I also like fruit.

ご飯 (ごはん)

rice / meal

この野菜は安いです。

果物 (くだもの)

fruit

果物が好きです。

kudamono ga suki desu — I like fruit.

この果物は高いです。

kono kudamono wa takai desu — This fruit is expensive.

あの店で果物を買います。

ano mise de kudamono wo kaimasu — I buy fruit at that store.

Contrast

Tip:The particle が marks the thing you like. Use は to mark the topic (the person who likes something): 私はご飯が好きです。

Tip:Use は instead of が when shifting topics or contrasting: 肉は好きですか means 'How about meat?' (shifting from a previous topic).
