This Thing, That Kind

Using これ・それ・あれ to refer to specific things; asking 'which one?' and 'what kind?'.

You are in a souvenir shop, looking at various items. You point to a specific item near you (これ), then to one further away (それ), and ask the shopkeeper 'which one?' (どれ) or 'what kind of thing?' (どんなもの) you should buy.

あれは学校です。
are wa gakkou desu. — That over there is a school.
あれは何ですか。
are wa nan desu ka. — What is that over there?
あれは山田さんの車です。
are wa Yamada-san no kuruma desu. — That over there is Mr. Yamada's car.
